Aaron,
I think these coordinated campaigns are a great idea and increase the likelihood
of scientifically useful results on the target objects. For me that is a strong
motivator. Achieving success on some of these early campaigns is also more
likely to catch the attention of professionals and awaken them to the potential
of enlisting observing support from amateurs. The quality of equipment and the
level of skill in many amateur's hands now makes such collaboration more
feasible and potentially productive than ever.
Another important aspect of these campaigns is the rapid learning environment
they provide. In my experience you learn a lot more when you are pushing
yourself and your equipment and a coordinated observing campaign provides
exactly this environment. I'm sure they are helping to develop skills and
experience in the amateur community.
Weather for most people is a sufficient moderator that burn-out is not a serious
problem. And besides, this is all optional! Keep up the good work - you're doing
a great job!
