Bill, I can kinda answer part of that.  I'm 99% 
sure that MaxIm can be scripted the same way.  I 
started to write a script to completely automate 
stacking time series with very little problem.  I 
can't imaging that writing to the FITS header 
would be a problem...unless I am missing 
something.  Getting the definition correct is 
always a problem and Arne just helped with that.
