Dr. Steve Howell, WIYN Observatory & NOAO, has requested
observations of the polar VV Pup for the upcoming week. There is a
90% chance that he will be getting infrared spectra on the object from
UKIRT on Mauna Kea on December 28-29. He will know next Monday for
sure but since I will not be here to relay the info I wanted to send
this out now. Also, observations before and after the 28-29th would be
useful for baseline coverage.
Observations in BVRI are requested. Also, he needs observations
at a good compromise between time resolution and precision. So please
follow the below observing plan:
- Please observe it in one filter instead of alternating between
filters. Set your exposure time to get a precision of 0.03-0.05
magnitudes.
- If observing, please post to the aavso-photometry discussion
group and tell us what filter you are using so that someone else can
use a different filter during their observations.
- Most people have only a V filter so if you have BRI filters then
use one of them and let someone else use V.
- I know we don't have RI measurements on our chart yet. Go ahead
and observe in RI if someone else has already committed to B and V
during your observing run. Save your fits images and reduce the data
once we get RI photometry for the chart (likely in a couple of weeks -
I'll post here when it is ready).
The VV Pup chart is here:
http://www.aavso.org/cgi-bin/searchcharts3.pl?name=vv%20pup
Our latest observation of VV Pup is:
VV PUP DEC 15.5080 2453355.008 <15.1 SRX
This is why we need CCD baseline coverage, we don't even know its
quiescent level right now. :(
I return to Boston around 02UT on the 29th. If I'm semi-sane from
travel and see that people are observing then I'll open up the chat
room so we can coordinate in real time.
Good luck!!
