It's time to start thinking about presenting a paper at the Society for Astronomical Sciences annual
meeting.
The next meeting will be Wed/Thur, May 25/26, 2005, at the Northwoods Resort in Big Bear, CA. The
speaker's committee has been working to get a preliminary group of professionals and well-known
amateurs to present papers. Here's a sampling of the _tentative_ group so far:
Dr. David Bradstreet Learning and Using Binary Maker 3
(binary star modeling)
Dr. Ted Bowell The Discovery Channel Telescope
Dr. Petr Pravec An Observing Program to Search for binary NEAs
Dr. Mark Sykes NASA's On-line Archiving Facility (OLAF)
Richard Miles Asteroid Photometry
Thomas Kaye Amateur Spectroscopy
Dave Kenyon Meteor Research for Amateurs
Some other professionals and amateurs have expressed interest and may be added shortly.
The SAS web site ( http://www.socastrosci.org ) has more information with more to come, such as
making room bookings at the Northwoods. For those who've submitted papers in the past, a new style
guide will be going up shortly.
The exact deadlines have yet to be determined but, approximately, abstracts will be due in late
February with those accepted for presentation of papers to be notified a few days later. Final
papers will be due sometime in April. This is tentative and subject to change but is sufficiently
close for initial planning.
The goal of the Society is to promote amateurs to become active in research and to foster
professional-amateur collaborations. The meeting is open to all levels, not just the advanced. What
better way to move up than to get with others with more experience who are willing to share their
knowledge and expertise?
If you have any questions, please feel free to visit the SAS site or send email to
