[AAVSO-DIS] What to do about new variables?

It seems to me that discovering previously uncatalogued variables is reasonably
easy. 

For example many very red stars (2MASS magnitudes J-K>1.2) are variable and it is
not difficult to search the on-line databases to find large numbers of such
stars.
 
Is there any merit in doing this though?
