I'd add a small addendum to this: the only really proven way to make
sure that data is preserved is to publish it. This, of course, does
not mean publishing things in a sloppy manner nor does it mean we
should clutter publications with little one-offs. It does mean that
the work of Sebastian, John Greaves, Patrick Wils and many others,
who aggregate lists of new similar objects into a single publications
are very worthwhile indeed and go a long way to preserve the data
forever. Email lists and discussion boards and web databases may not
stand the test of time like ol' fashioned publication.
